The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Friday suspended the Air India pilot who was reported to have invited a woman friend into the cockpit during the flight. Moreover, the DGCA also imposed a Rs 30 lakh fine on Air India.

The incident took place on February 27 on a Delhi-Dubai flight.

DGCA released an official statement and said the pilot in command of the Air India flight AI-915 allowed the entry of an Air India staff on duty travelling as a passenger into the Cockpit during the cruise and violated DGCA regulations. Air India was fined Rs 30 lakhs for not promptly and effectively addressing the safety-sensitive issue, the statement further read.

The DGCA said the pilot License of the PIC has been suspended for a period of three months for misuse of his authority vested under the Aircraft Rules 1937 and allowing violation of the applicable DGCA regulations.

The civil aviation authority also directed Air India to take administrative action against the Staff on Duty/Passenger including removing from any Managerial functions in the organisation for a specified period.

Additionally, the Copilot has been warned for not being assertive in preventing the violation.

In February, the crew on the Air India flight filed a complaint against the pilot who allowed his woman friend into the cockpit.

In the complaint, the crew alleged that the pilot was late and boarded the aircraft along with passengers. He then asked the crew if there was a seat available in business class for his friend who was travelling in economy class.

He asked his woman friend to join him in the Cockpit due to the non-availability of a business class seat.

The Kerala Story: Supreme Court notice to Bengal, Tamil Nadu

The Kerala Story’s makers say their story is of a group of women who were purportedly coerced into becoming Muslims and recruited by ISIS.

The Kerala Story

The Supreme Court has issued notice to West Bengal and Tamil Nadu for not displaying the film. Bengal has banned the film’s release in the state.

The bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha wanted to understand the nature of the problem since The Kerala Story was playing across the nation without incident.

The Court asked why should West Bengal ban the film when it was being shown in other states with a similar population mix. The makers of the Sudipto Sen-helmed film had moved the apex court after the Bengal government banned its showing and Tamil Nadu exhibitors were not showing it fearing violence and damage to their property.

The bench noted the film was not banned for its artistic value in West Bengal and in Tamil Nadu, the filmmakers said it was a de facto ban since theatre owners feared violence if they screened it.

Senior Advocate Abhishek Singhvi, representing the state of West Bengal, claimed there would be law and order issues as per intelligence inputs. WB Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had said the film maligns Kerala and its citizens. She also criticised the BJP for promoting communal polarisation.

The Court inquired about the security provided to the theatres and multiplexes showing the film in Tamil Nadu. It told the state government counsel that the state can’t remain silent if theatres are attacked.

The next hearing is on May 17. The trailer of The Kerala Story sparked an uproar on social media and in opposition circles, after it claimed some 32,000 women from Kerala had been brainwashed and converted to Islam and left for Syria to fight for the Islamic State, an Islamic terrorist group.

While the film encountered challenges in states not ruled by the BJP, the film got tax free status in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

The Kerala Story’s makers say their story is of a group of women who were purportedly coerced into becoming Muslims and recruited by ISIS.

Opposition parties, including the Congress which was in power in Kerala at the time the film is set in, charged that the Sudipto Sen film was incorrect in its numbers. Then Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala said such numbers are meant only to polarise people in the country.
