MUMBAI: With the Supreme Court slamming former governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari for depending on extraneous material and acting beyond his powers to unconstitutionally asking the former chief minister to face an illegal floor test, Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray on Friday demanded that either the governor's post be abolished or a collegium system be established for the appointment.
Taking a dig at state legislative assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar, Thackeray said that the Supreme Court had entrusted him the job of just announcing that the "parrot is dead", and added that having left the Shiv Sena for NCP and finally joining the BJP, Narwekar knows how to "travel within the framework of law".
Addressing a press conference at his Bandra residence Matoshree on Friday, Thackeray said if the assembly Speaker takes any wrong decision, the Shiv Sena (UBT) will again knock on the SC's doors. He also urged PM Narendra Modi to appeal to the Shinde-Fadnavis government to resign on moral grounds and face elections to "save the image of the country, Hindutva and Maharashtra", He also demanded that a case under IPC Section 420 be filed against Koshyari for his illegal actions and cheating the people of the state.
"The SC, in its judgment, observed that if I had not resigned, I could have been made the chief minister again...This means that the Shinde-Fadnavis government is illegal...The SC order has also paved the way for BJP to get rid of this burden [Shinde-led Sena] that they are carrying," Thackeray said. "On Thursday, the court entrusted the job of announcing that the parrot that was placed in front of him [Narwekar] is dead, after pronouncing that it is not moving, not opening its eyes and it is not breathing. We had the Assembly Speaker (in our party) earlier...then NCP and now he is in BJP...He knows well how to travel within the framework of the law..."
"The Speaker will take decisions in his own way. If he does something wrong, just as we had gone to the Supreme Court against the Election Commission decision, if something crazy happens here, again the doors of the SC are open to us...the Speaker is abroad. He should come as soon as possible. A decision should be taken as directed by the SC," Thackeray said.
He further said that the SC has passed harsh strictures against the anarchy that was going on in Maharashtra. "The SC has exposed their ugly face...I urge PM Modi, we may have political differences..but...stop this defamation by asking the Maharashtra government to resign and let us face elections."
