GUWAHATI: In the last two years of Himanta Biswa Sarma-led BJP government, a total of 100 government employees, including 21 gazetted officers, have been arrested on bribery charges in the state.
Soon after assuming the CM’s chair, Sarma waged a war against corruption, which had paralysed the government and shaken the faith of citizens.
Adhering strictly to the directive of the chief minister, the directorate of vigilance and anti-corruption (D&VAC) caught 100 public servants and seven middlemen between May 10, 2021 and May 10, 2023. Thirteen government officials were arrested in 2021, fifty-six in 2022 and 31 so far this year. The sleuths also recovered more than Rs 1.56 crore during the raids.
D&VAC ADGP Surendra Kumar said during the said period, a total of 43 charge sheets were submitted in court in connection with trap cases against 50 arrested accused persons.
He said, “The D&VAC has been relentlessly working to mitigate corruption in government offices and has also succeeded to a great extent. People have also shown their trust in us and fully cooperated with us to weed out corruption.”
He said the D&VAC has made a control room number, a telephone number and a WhatsApp number available to the people to lodge complaints about corruption. “They can also write to the dedicated email id or to the Twitter handle and the Instagram handle of the D&VAC to lodge a complaint. Many cases have been picked up from social media,” he added.
