A group of concerned citizens is rallying thousands of people to form a 22-kilometer-long human chain on the banks of the Yamuna on June 4 to draw attention to the sorry state of the river plagued by pollution and degradation. The chain will extend from Wazirabad to Okhla in Delhi, a 22-kilometer stretch which accounts for 75 per cent of the river's pollution load. Twenty-two drains fall into the river in this stretch. The body of a 50-year-old man was found inside a flat in Kopri area of Thane city on Saturday evening, a civic official said. The deceased was identified as Ravindra More who lived alone, he said. Neighbours alerted police after noticing foul smell coming from inside the flat. Police broke the door open and entered the house to find the body which was in a highly decomposed state, he said. The body was sent for autopsy and further probe is on, a police official said. (PTI)
A 22-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl with whom he developed friendship on social media in Nagpur city of Maharashtra, police said on Saturday. A police official said the man came in contact with the girl two months ago during a road accident involving the two in the Ajni area of the city and started following her on Instagram. He called the girl to a friend's room in Ajni under the pretext of meeting her on May 11 where he allegedly raped her. (PTI)
A 31-year-old man who was upset because he could not get married allegedly died by suicide in Nagpur district on Saturday, police said. The deceased was identified as Ashish Bambal, a resident of Patkakhedi village. Bambal, who worked at a factory, was reportedly unhappy as he was still unmarried. On Friday, the family had attended a wedding. On Saturday morning, he allegedly hanged himself from a ceiling raft in his room, said an official of Saoner police station. Further probe is on. (PTI)
Mumbai on Saturday reported 28 Covid-19 cases, taking the tally to 11,63,503, the city civic body said. No fresh fatality is reported leaving the death toll unchanged at 19,769, the BMC bulletin said. A day before, the city saw 28 cases and a single COVID-19 fatality. Mumbai is now left with 283 active cases after 47 people recovered from COVID-19 infection. The overall tally of recoveries is 11,43,451, it said. (PTI)
Delhi on Saturday recorded a maximum temperature of 41.8 degrees Celsius, two notches above the season's average, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The minimum temperature in the city settled at 22 degrees Celsius, three notches below the normal, it said. The weather office has predicted a partly cloudy sky possibility of a dust storm or thunderstorm towards the afternoon or evening and strong surface winds during day time for Sunday. (PTI)

A 23-year-old man has been arrested with MD drugs worth Rs 66 lakh from suburban Vikhroli in Mumbai, an Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) official said on Saturday. The man was trying to flee after spotting a police patrolling vehicle on the Eastern Express Highway on Friday. He was nabbed after a chase, the official said. Police found 33 gm of MD drugs in his possession and arrested him. A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and further investigation is underway, the official added. (PTI)
About 2,500 kg of narcotics worth about Rs 1,200 crore has been seized off India's western coast and a suspected Pakistani national apprehended, the NCB said on Saturday, calling it the largest seizure of methamphetamine in the country. The record seizure was made by the federal anti-narcotics agency in a joint operation with the Navy, it said. (PTI)
Two young men were killed and another was seriously injured when their motorcycle collided with a Maharashtra state transport bus in Nashik city in the wee hours on Saturday, police said. A man on the run for the last five years in connection with a murder case in Tamil Nadu was nabbed from Vasai in Palghar district in Maharashtra, police said on Saturday. Raghu Dudai Mandal is accused of killing his co-worker in a factory in Chennai when the latter was asleep in his room over a petty issue in September 2018. (PTI)
The Supreme Court has set aside the conviction of a man in a 27-year-old murder case saying no incriminating circumstances appeared against him in the evidence. A bench of justices Abhay S Oka and Rajesh Bindal noted that the only allegation against the appellant was that he was standing with a "katta" (country-made pistol) in his hand outside the house where the murder took place. Ten tribal MLAs belonging to the Chin-Kuki-Mizo-Zomi group in Manipur have urged the Centre to give their region a "separate administration" in the wake of recent violent clashes between the Meiteis and tribals. Over 2.6 lakh voters who exercised their franchise in the May 10 Karnataka assembly polls used the 'none of the above' or NOTA option, according to Election Commission figures. According to figures available around 3.30 pm, 2,59,278 (0.7 per cent) out of the nearly 3.84 crore people who came out to vote on Wednesday exercised the NOTA option. The NOTA option on electronic voting machines (EVMs) was introduced in 2013 and it has its own symbol -- a ballot paper with a black cross on it. (PTI)
The body of a woman was recovered from a drain in Maharashtra's Palghar district on Saturday, an official said. It was found near the Nalasopara railway station, on the outskirts of Mumbai, he said. The station house officer of Achole police station said a case of accidental death has been registered and the body has been sent to a government hospital for post-mortem. (PTI)
Some more jail officials are likely to be transferred in connection with the murder of gangster Tillu Tajpuriya by a member of a rival gang inside Tihar prison, officials said on Saturday. More than 90 jail officials here were transferred on Thursday. A senior official said some more transfers are likely to take place next week, including from the jail headquarters. (PTI)
A fire broke out early Saturday on the fifth floor of Jag Pravesh Chandra Hospital in northeast Delhi's Shastri Park area, officials said. According to fire officials, a fireman suffered minor injuries in the incident. The fire department received information regarding the fire at 12.16 am, following which eight fire tenders were rushed to the spot. Furniture, AC, false ceiling in the meeting room on the fifth floor of the hospital caught fire, but no other casualty was reported, a senior fire official said, adding that the flames were doused within an hour. The premises of the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata witnessed chaos on Friday night after a drunken passenger created ruckus there. The passenger, Pratul Ghosh was first detained by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel deputed for airport security and later handed over to the local Kolkata Airport Police Station.

Power supply likely to be hit in some North Delhi localities till May 15
The power supply may be affected in some North Delhi areas like Bawana, Rohini, Wazirpur, Shalimar Bagh and their adjoining areas between Saturday and Monday. Delhi Transco Limited said that National Highway Authority of India was constructing a six-lane Urban Extension Road-2 from National Highway 1 to Karala-Kanjhawala Road under PM Gati Shakti Project. For the construction of the road, the height of 220 KV Bawana–Shalimar Bagh power transmission line of Delhi Transco needs to be raised. “Therefore, this line will be under shutdown for three days from May 13 to May 15,” it said.

Delhi Police has formed a special investigation team under a DCP to probe the sexual harassment charges against Wrestling Federation chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh brought by seven female wrestlers, it has told a court. It has also recorded the statement of Singh and WFI assistant secretary Vinod Tomar. Police have also sought some documents and details from Bhushan and he is likely to be questioned again. The statement of another wrestler was also recorded by cops. Last week, Bhushan was questioned for 3-4 hours during which he denied the allegations levelled against him.
