GURGAON: Police busted a gang of six people, including two women from Manipur and four Nigerians, for allegedly cheating a woman of over Rs 8 lakh after befriending her on a matrimonial website. Police said the gang had cheated over 100 women .
The woman had complained to the cyber police on March 13 that she met a person who introduced himself as a doctor from the United States early this year. And, he liked her profile.
"The complainant told us that she had a profile on a matrimonial site where she came across an eye surgeon based in the US. He introduced himself as Dr Mark Bakshi. They shared their contact numbers and started chatting on WhatsApp. Over a period of time, they became good friends," said ACP (cyber) Priyanshu Diwan on Friday.
After a few days, the accused, on the pretext of sending expensive gifts, cheated her of more than Rs 8 lakh.
"The accused told the woman that he was sending some gold and diamond ornaments and $ 85,000 for her.
On March 4, the victim got a call from a woman who posed as a customs officer from Mumbai airport and asked her to transfer Rs 45,000 to get clearance for her gifts.
The victim transferred the money immediately. "Later, she started getting calls every day for different clearances and these cyber thugs duped her of Rs 8.85 lakh, but she did not receive her gifts," Diwan added.
Based on her complaint, the fraudsters were booked under IPC Section 420 (cheating) and Information Technology (IT) Act at the Cyber police station (east).
The arrested have been identified as Samual Ubaka Igwatu, Amanual Chukwudi, Anidebe Alex, Audimanobifitu Aloyasis, all from Nigeria and two Manipur-based women have been identified as Wasomichog and Chanchmaliu Pamey.
"We have recovered three passports from the Nigerian nationals and they were staying in India illegally as their visa had already expiredWe have also recovered more than Rs 31,000 from the accused and the rest of the amount will be recovered soon," the ACP stated.
Police have also recovered a total of 16 mobile phones, 28 SIM cards, four laptops, six debit cards and six pen drives from the possession of the accused.
