It wasn't long ago that Chandler Rivers was coming up through the youth football ranks in Beaumont.
On Saturday, the Beaumont United graduate turned Duke University star gave back to the community that raised him while hosting a youth football camp.
The Chandler Rivers "More Than An Athlete" Camp was held Saturday at Beaumont ISD Memorial Stadium, with more than 50 youth players showing up. Rivers, alongside high school coaches and other college athletes, provided up-close-and-personal training to the next generation of local football stars.
Rivers was a three-star recruit out of Beaumont United who chose Duke over many other scholarship offers nationwide. In addition to playing football at Beaumont United, Rivers also won a silver medal in the state long jump event and was a member of the Timberwolves state championship basketball team.
At Duke, Rivers has quickly become a big contributor for the Blue Devils' defense. He was an honorable mention for the College Football News Freshman All-America team after appearing in all 12 games for Duke last fall.
Another big name in local football, Denver Broncos safety P.J. Locke, will host his third annual "Team Lockedown" youth camp July 17 in Beaumont. Those looking to register can do so at bamfam.org.
