GUWAHATI: While the overall CBSE Class XII pass percentage has dropped by a little over five per cent from last year, for the eight northeastern states under the Guwahati zone the decline has been a whopping 8.3%.
The pass percentage of the Guwahati zone stood at 83.73. Last year, the Guwahati zone recorded a pass percentage of 92.06, which was almost on a par with the national average of 92.71.
Among the 16 CBSE regions in the country, Guwahati was ranked 12th, ahead of Bhopal (13th), Noida (14th), Dehradun (15th) and Prayagraj (16th) in the pass percentage tally.
The Class XII board examinations were held from February 15 to April 5. The results were declared on Friday.
All schools in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, which do not have state education boards, are affiliated to CBSE.
Board officials have been blaming the two states for the poor show by the Guwahati zone among all other CBSE zones in the country.
This year, however, Sikkim was not at the bottom. With a 86.93 pass percentage, this Himalayan state was in a better position than the Guwahati zone.
"But Arunachal Pradesh has been the major concern," T Mate, regional officer at CBSE's Guwahati zone, said. Arunachal Pradesh slipped to the bottom with a 65.19 pass percentage.
"Sikkim has improved of late, despite the fact that a large number of schools are run by the government there. But the pass percentages of schools in Arunachal Pradesh have been quite low. They must pull up their socks. If the Arunachal Pradesh government helps improve the results, the Guwahati region will surge ahead in the future," Mate told TOI.
Keeping with the all-India trend, girls outshine boys in the Guwahati zone too with a pass percentage of 83.6. The pass percentage of boys was 79.89. The pass percentage of transgender candidates was 100 percent.
State-wise, Meghalaya stood at the top of the pass percentage tally among the northeastern states with 96.03% success rate, followed by Mizoram (94.65), Assam (94.05), Manipur (88.26), Sikkim (86.93) and Tripura (82.88).
A total of 613 schools participated in the exam from the northeast. The boards were held at 343 examination centres in the region.
From the northeastern states, a total of 60,975 students appeared in the examination, out of which 49,825 passed.
Out of the 30,029 girls who took the exam, 25,103 passed. Altogether 30,945 boys appeared in the exam and 24,721 passed. The highest number of candidates (17,327) appeared from Assam, whereas the least number of candidates (411) appeared from Mizoram.
