The victory helped MI collect their fourth win in the last five outings and their seventh overall in 12 games and bridge the gap with GT and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the current top two teams on the points table besides getting them closer to sealing a playoff berth for themselves.
MI posted a commanding 218/5 riding on Suryakumar Yadav’s sensational century after being invited to bat by GT at the Wankhede Stadium. Their bowling unit then responded brilliantly, reducing Gujarat to 103/8 at one stage before an outstanding 79 not out from Rashid Khan, who had earlier grabbed 4/30, helped reduce the margin of defeat for the defending champions.
The victory helped Mumbai regain the third spot that they had lost to the Rajasthan Royals (RR) following their nine-wicket thrashing of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) the day before. RR currently are fourth on the table with the second-best Net Run Rate among all teams.
Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are fifth with 11 points while three teams — Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), KKR and Punjab Kings (PBKS) — are tied on 10 points each and occupy the sixth, seventh and eighth spots respectively, though Kolkata have played a game more than Bangalore and Punjab.
Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals lie at the ninth and 10th positions respectively, the latter having played a game extra.
