Police are at the scene of a security alert in Magilligan, County Londonderry.

The alert is ongoing in the Point Road area.

The road was closed and cordons put in place following a report of a suspicious object, police said.

Motorists and members of the public have been asked to avoid the area. The PSNI said a further update would be provided in due course.

A spokesperson for Lough Foyle ferries told BBC News NI they experienced some disruption to their service.

The ferry service operates between Magilligan Point in Northern Ireland and Greencastle, County Donegal, in the Republic of Ireland.

Sailings were suspended from 09:30 BST until shortly after 10am, the spokesperson said.
