Two convicts dig tunnel at Silchar central prison, escape
Silchar: Two murder convicts, who were serving life terms at Silchar central jail, on Thursday escaped from the prison by digging a tunnel that originated from the toilet of their cell.
The convicts have been identified as Hifur Rahman, a resident of Karimganj, and Deep Nunia, a resident of Cachar district, and were kept in the same cell. Hifzur was awarded life imprisonment in 2011 after he was found guilty of murdering a college student in Karimganj, while Deep was given life term in 2018 in connection with the murder of a woman in Meherpur near Silchar, said sources.
SP (Cachar) Numal Mahatto said a manhunt is on to nab them. Sources in the jail said after the matter came to light, SP Numal Mahatto, Cachar deputy commissioner Rohan Kumar Jha and a few other officials visited the jail and an investigation was initiated.
Meanwhile, the jailbreak has raised a number of questions on the security measures and the jail authorities’ role in the correctional facility, which is home to some dreaded criminals.
