Panaji: The urban development department has scheduled the election of chairperson and vice chairperson of the newly elected councils of Ponda and Sanquelim on May 16. The deputy collectors of respective talukas will serve as returning officers, said Gurudas Pilarnkar, director of urban development department.
The elections to the two councils were held on Sunday. The nominations will be accepted until 1 pm on May 15 while a training for new council members will be held on May 18 and 19 at the Goa Institute of Public Administration and Rural Development (GIPARD).
With BJP backed panels emerging victorious in both councils, the elections of chairpersons and vice persons are expected to be smooth.
During the previous term, Sanquelim municipal council, which was dominated by Congress’ Dharmesh Sanglani’s panel, had witnessed several ups and downs, with BJP wresting control from Congress.
