BENGALURU: A woman sustained severe injuries after her husband allegedly hacked her with a machete at their residence in Victoria Layout, Nallurahalli, near Whitefield on May 7.
The injured woman is Thayamma, 37, a housekeeping staffer with a private office, and the suspect is her husband Veeresh, an auto driver from Mantralaya in Andhra Pradesh.
According to Thayamma’s complaint, she fell in love with Veeresh and married him 18 years ago. They lived in Nallurahalli with their two children. Veeresh drove an auto for a living and was finding it difficult to run the family given the high cost of living in the city. He started showing interest in returning to his hometown and began persuading his wife to join him. But she objected, considering the kids’ education.
“Their son and daughter are studying in a government school (Kannada medium). She knew their education would be affected if they shifted to AP. So, she did not agree with her husband, which led him to suspect her character and assault her,” a cop said.
Police said Veeresh visited his hometown a few months ago without his wife and children, and took her gold jewellery. When he returned to Bengaluru on May 6, Thayamma asked for her jewellery. He scolded her for not accompanying him.
When she again asked him about the gold around 7am on May 7, he took a machete and attacked her legs and arms; her right wrist was severed. He fled the spot before neighbours rushed to rescue her. The children were with their grandparents at the time.
Thayamma was rushed to a nearby private hospital. Police registered an attempt-to-murder case, but found Veeresh’s mobile was switched off. Efforts are on to nab him.
