Texas Lawmakers Pass Measure Preventing Treatment for Transgender Youth

The bill bars physicians from administering gender-affirming care, including hormones, to minors

AUSTIN, Texas—The nation’s second-largest state is set to outlaw gender-affirming medical treatment for transgender youth, after a Friday vote by Texas lawmakers, putting it among a wave of Republican-led states establishing such bans.

Like most similar measures, the Texas bill bars physicians from administering to minors medications that can delay the onset of puberty, hormones or surgeries that aid in gender transition. It applies if the purpose of the care is “affirming the child’s perception of the child’s sex if that perception is inconsistent with the child’s biological sex.”
