A Shiv Sena (UBT) leader has revealed the reason why Uddhav Thackeray resigned as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra before facing the floor test

In an unexpected move, Uddhav Thackeray resigned from his post as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra on June 29 last year. Close to a year later, that decision has come to haunt Thackeray after the Supreme Court judgment in Maharashtra Political crisis saying they can't reinstate him as  Chief Minister since the Shiv Sena leader chose to quit without facing the floor test in the legislative assembly.

A Shiv Sena (UBT) leader has now clarified the reason why Thackeray quit as the Chief Minister without facing the floor test. As per a report in Hindustan Times quoting this unnamed leader, Thackeray felt ‘tricked and hurt’ by the behaviour of his own MLAs.

“He thought he had been dragged into a dirty power game and he did not deserve to face allegations by the rebels on the floor of the assembly. Besides, we also suspected that a few more MLAs would cross over to the Shinde faction during the debate on trust vote. That would be insulting and embarrassing and he wanted no part of that," an unnamed Shiv Sena leader told HT

Notably, Uddhav did not seek any legal advice before his resignation and even his alliance partners in the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) - Congress and NCP were not aware of his resignation. Reportedly, only five people in Maharashtra knew Uddhav Thackeray was going to resign. This included his wife Rashmi, his sons Aaditya and Tejas, and Shive Sena leaders Subhash Desai and Anil Parab.

While his alliance partner in MVA, Sharad Pawar did not say anything after the Supreme Court judgment on Thursday. However, Pawar had blamed Thackeray and his party for the Maharashtra government collapse in his memoir Lok Mazhe Sangati. He wrote, “We were capable of handling such attempts(to destabilize Maharashtra government) at our level. We did not anticipate that there would a storm within the Shiv Sena after we had appointed Uddhav Thackeray as chief minister. The Sena leadership failed to handle the rebellion in its party and the MVA lost power because Uddhav resigned without a fight."

The CJI DY Chandrachud-led bench on Thursday said that former Maharashtra Governor BS Koshyari's decision to conduct a floor test was not in accordance with the Constitution. Supreme Court also noted that the Speaker's decision to appoint Bharat Gogawale a whip of the Eknath Shinde group was "wrong".
