MNF 1 short of majority mark in CADC polls
AIZAWL: The ruling Mizo National Front (MNF), though one short of majority, has emerged as the largest party in the election to the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) with 10 seats.
The BJP secured five seats while the Congress, which had ruled the state for decades, managed to bag only four seats. The Zoram People's Movement, which contested the CADC polls for the first time and had fielded 13 candidates, failed to open its account.
Elections to the 19 seats of the CADC were held on Tuesday and the results were announced on Thursday. The election was countermanded in Rengkashya seat following the murder of the BJP candidate, Amit Kumar Chakma, on May 4 in a clash between the supporters of the BJP and the MNF.
Police registered a criminal case at Vaseitlang PS and arrested the MNF candidate for the seat, Prema Ranjan Chakma, on May 5. The state election commission announced that election to the constituency would be held on May 17 and counting of votes undertaken on May 19.
Among the successful candidates, there are 12 new faces while seven present members of district council out of 16 of them seeking re-election from the same constituencies they won in the 2018 election.
