AHMEDABAD: A 29-year-old woman from Mumbai on Wednesday filed a complaint with Ahmedabad Railway Police alleging that her co-passenger made obscene gestures and flashed before her while they were travelling in a train to Bandra.
The woman alleged that cops tried to shield the accused but only after other co-travellers protested, police were forced to book him.
The complainant, who works with a private firm, had gone to Gurugram for an official work and was returning to Mumbai in Garib Rath.
The woman boarded the train at 9.30am on Wednesday from Gurugram. She said that she was sleeping and suddenly woke up when the train stopped at Ahmedabad junction. She found that a passenger travelling in the seat in front of her seat was flashing and looking at her.
She said that the man identified as Sachin Kumar was showing his private parts to him with the torchlight of his cellphone.
The complainant said, “Even as I told cops escorting the train to nab the man and take legal action, they tried to shield him. The cops took him inside a toilet and told him to remain inside. After that my other co-travellers raised protests and the police booked the man.” The accused was booked under IPS section 354A(1) (physical contact and advances involving unwelcome and explicit sexual overtures) and 509 (intend to insult the modesty of any woman).
(The victim's identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme Court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
