PANAJI: Goa College of Agriculture (Ela, Old Goa) will hold the Mudassachem fest — celebrating the millets,
mango and music of Goa — on May 14 from 11am to 3pm.
"It is a great opportunity for the young students of Goa College of Agriculture to promote millets, mangoes and other farming related activities and showcase their farming skills," principal of the college Suresh Kunkaikar said, adding that the essence of the festival is to "promote the nutritional and ecological value", and for the new generation to appreciate millets and mangoes in our diets.
Millet, once a staple diet of traditional Indian cooking, has been making a slow comeback in India and across the globe.
To keep the momentum going, the United Nations has declared 2023 as the international year of this crop, supported by India and the government of Goa.
The festival will therefore focus on revival of millet-based foods and celebrate the culture, knowledge, economic empowerment of communities and recipes surrounding millets.
There will also be a celebration of the mangoes of Goa.
The festival will begin at 11am with a mango orchard walk, following which attendees will be led to the Goan food stalls, through grafting workshops and Konkani cultural programmes with Ghumot (Earthen instrument), kottieos (coconut shells) and guitars.
