Two suspects in 2022 Knoxville fatal shooting were arrested on multiple charges

U.S. Marshals and fugitive task force members have arrested two suspects in the murder of 40-year-old Demetrius Bomar, who was shot and killed at an East Knoxville home on Dec. 7.

Rodney Smartt, 22, of Knoxville, and Ayla Gilbert, 24, of Maryville, were taken into custody on multicount indictments, which include charges of first-degree murder, aggravated robbery and especially aggravated kidnapping, a Knoxville Police Department spokesperson said in a press release.

Police say the suspects confronted a man at a Lansing Avenue home in what appeared to be a robbery, the release said. The suspects continued to the home on Lay Avenue, where both Bomar and the second victim, who was not identified, were shot. The suspects fled.

Bomar was pronounced dead he was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center.

Gilbert was arrested May 10 at a home on Dinwiddie Street. Smartt was arrested May 11 in Knoxville's Walter P. Taylor Homes area.
