CHENNAI: Former chief minister O Panneerselvam on Friday alleged that the DMK had enacted a drama of opposing the National Education Policy to win the assembly elections. “The DMK has been taking dual standards in every issue pre and post-assembly election and it has been proven in the education policy as well,” the leader said.
In a statement, Panneerselvam pointed to the recent resignation of a member of the high-level committee set up to evolve a state education policy, alleging that the committee was being spearheaded towards formulating the policy on the footsteps of the NEP.
The rejoinder from the committee to the allegations was wishy-washy, OPS said. “I urge the chief minister to clarify on the latest developments in the high-level committee, whether the state formulate its own policy or follow the NEP and when it will come into force,” OPS said.
Panneerselvam said the chief minister, while he was the leader of the opposition, had strongly opposed the NEP and demanded a special assembly session to pass a resolution against the central policy that was anti-social justice, anti-federalism and anti-equality. Stalin had also written a letter to PM Narendra Modi, opposing the policy, OPS said.
“In 2021 the school education minister announced that the state would take the good aspects of the NEP,” OPS said, while pointing to allegations by academicians that state had been implementing the NEP’s recommendations through Illam Thedi Kalvi and Naan Mudhalvan schemes.
