East St. Louis man sentenced in ‘execution-style’ murder at tire shop in Granite City
An East St. Louis man received a 78-year prison sentence Thursday for an “execution-style murder” of a man at a Granite City tire shop in 2021, the Madison County prosecutor said.
Fred W. Williams, 33, was given the sentence in the fatal shooting of an acquaintance, Delas M. Carter, 30, of Alorton, which is now part of Cahokia Heights, according to a news release from Madison County State’s Attorney Tom Haine.
After a week-long trial in March, a jury found Williams guilty of first-degree murder and reckless discharge of a firearm.
The shooting occurred on June 25, 2021 in the 1500 block of Madison Avenue.
Carter was an employee of the tire shop and had stepped outside when he was shot.
“Williams approached Carter outside the building and began firing at close range, striking Carter multiple times,” the news release stated. “Williams began to run away, but stopped, returned and fired more shots while standing over Carter, who had fallen to the ground.”
Carter suffered 10 bullet wounds.
Investigators did not determine a motive for the shooting.
Circuit Judge Kyle Napp told Williams a security video showed him “coming back to ensure that you got the job done,” according to the news release. Napp said the footage “was hard to watch, and I’ve seen a lot.”
“We’re glad that the judge saw this criminal for who he is: a ruthless killer who needs to remain safely behind bars for a long time,” Haine said. “We hope that this sentence brings some solace and healing to Mr. Carter’s family members, who have endured so much grief and have exhibited great stoicism throughout the court process.”
Assistant State’s Attorney Luke Yager and Assistant State’s Attorney Phillip Voss prosecuted the case against Williams.
Granite City Police had also identified a second suspect, Dionta O. Moore, 31, who took his own life following a chase on the day of the shooting.
Williams was arrested in Belleville.
