The only thing better than a great laptop is a great laptop that fits your budget. Nowadays, even cheap PCs pack the specs to help you tackle whatever's on your to-do list, whether it's work, school assignments, watching Netflix, or just endlessly browsing social media. If you're hunting for a new one but don't necessarily want to wipe your savings account in one go, we're compiling a weekly list of the best deals on laptops across major retailers right here. Read on for our top picks as of May 12 (categorized by price, then listed in alphabetical order).

Why we like it

This 14-inch ASUS E410 laptop comes with an Intel Celeron N4500 processor, 4GB of RAM, and 128GB of eMMC storage. It's nothing to write home about spec-wise, but Best Buy(opens in a new tab)'s clearance pricing puts it at an incredibly tempting price point for casual web surfers. (It also comes with a free month's worth of Xbox Game Pass, though we wouldn't recommend playing any games on it besides The Sims or Minecraft on low graphics settings.) It's just $6 more expensive than another E410 configuration(opens in a new tab) on clearance with half the storage capacity and a worse CPU.

The new Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3i is a tough and sleek 15-inch laptop with narrow bezels and a fast-charging feature that provides two hours of use after being plugged in for 15 minutes. Its build meets military-grade durability standards, so it'll hold up well against the wear and tear of daily commutes or frequent travel. This particular configuration(opens in a new tab) features a 13th-generation Intel Core i3 processor, 8GB of RAM, and a hefty 512GB of storage, and it's gotten $20 cheaper since last week.

Samsung is finally running a decent sale on its new Galaxy Book3 series that doesn't require any trade-ins. The cheapest one is the entry-level Galaxy Book3, a lightweight traditional laptop featuring a snappy 13th-gen Intel Core i7 processor and a 15.6-inch full HD display with a wide 16:9 aspect ratio. Its 512GB base configuration is down to $750 on the brand's website(opens in a new tab) through May 14 — a deal that Best Buy(opens in a new tab) was matching before it sold out there.

Last year's Alienware x14 R1 is the thinnest 14-inch laptop from Dell's ultra-popular line of gaming PCs, and the first 14-inch gaming laptop to support NVIDIA's G-SYNC and Advanced Optimus technologies. (Those make it really good at eliminating screen-tearing and give it some impressive battery power, respectively.) The configuration with a 12th-gen Intel Core i7 processor, GeForce RTX 3060 graphics, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage just hit $1,200 at Best Buy(opens in a new tab), which is a $100 price drop since last week. It comes with a free month's worth of Xbox Game Pass to boot.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are several times throughout the year when we see extra-low prices on laptops:

  • Around Amazon Prime Day, which generally happens in early July

  • During back-to-school sales in July and August

  • When retailers' Black Friday and holiday deals are in full swing from October to December

Laptops also tend to get cheaper just after manufacturers announce next-generation models. With that in mind, keep an eye out for some additional price drops on older MacBooks as Apple gears up for the (rumored) launch of three new models at its annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in early June.

We find the best laptop deals at major retailers like Best Buy and Amazon (and occasionally Walmart). But because they often inflate original list prices to make discounts look better than they actually are, we also cross-check their offers with manufacturers' direct websites. Many of them are usually running sales of their own, too.

We're partial to Acer, Apple, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, LG, Microsoft, MSI, Razer, and Samsung: They're reputable brands that typically tick most (or all) of the right boxes when it comes to innovative features, durable build quality, customer support, and overall value.
