Prisoner injured in assault by inmates in Pune's Yerawada Central Prison

PUNE: An under trial prisoner was injured in an assault by four other inmates in Yerawada Central Prison on Wednesday night. It is the second such attack in the last 10 days and the fourth in six months, prison officials said.
The prison administration on Thursday submitted a complaint application to the Yerawada police who have yet to register a case.
Yerawada jail superintendent Rani Bhosale said, "The victim and the attackers quarrelled on Wednesday afternoon while playing a game of carrom. They had heated arguments in the afternoon but the guards intervened and pacified them. Later in the night, during the headcount, the inmates started arguing again over the same matter and one of the four inmates picked up a heavy food plate and assaulted the victim on his head. He was treated by the jail medical staff."
According to prison officials, the four attackers are members of a gang in Pune and are lodged in the prison under the provisions of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act.
Bhosale said, "There are about 7,000 inmates in the prison. During the day, they move freely on the prison's premises. Sometimes, they pick fights and end up beating each other. However, in a majority of cases, jail guards have intervened within a few seconds and pacified them. We also keep an eye on the movement of the inmates. We do not allow rival gang members to come together and they are lodged in separate barracks."
On May 2, an under trial prisoner sustained injury on his head after four inmates attacked him over a previous dispute in the prison. On April 1, two inmates of the prison sustained injuries on the head and shoulders after six under-trial prisoners attacked them over old rivalry. On November 8, 2022, two prison guards were injured when they intervened during a clash.
