When it comes to tax rates, especially state income tax, most of the notoriety accrues to California, New York and New Jersey. Minnesota has somehow flown under the radar (“Minnesota’s Global Tax Grab,” Review & Outlook, May 5).

Minnesota ranks sixth on the list of highest state income taxes, with a top rate of 9.85%, barely behind Oregon’s 9.9%. As you point out, though, the Democratic Party in Minnesota (called the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, or DFL) is proposing to hike the top rate to 10.85%. That would put us squarely in fourth place, behind New York and right above New Jersey. The DFL controls the governorship, the House and, with a one-seat majority, the state Senate.
