DUMKA: The body of a seven-year-old girl missing since Tuesday was found floating in a well at Jogiya village under the Mohanpur police station limits of Deoghar district on Wednesday.
Riya Kumari's father Suraj Kumar Mandal on Tuesday filed a missing complaint about her. Mandal claimed having received a call in his mobile around 2 am. "The call was from an unknown number. The phone remained connected for half an hour but the caller did not speak," he told police.
Mohanpur police station in-charge Prem Pradeep Kumar said, "Mandal stated someone might have mistakenly rang him. He hung up the call after about 30 minutes and went outside to relieve himself. When he returned and bolted the door from inside, Riya was inside the house. However, Mandal said his daughter was missing when he woke up around 5 am. The backdoor of the house was ajar."
Kumar said footages captured by CCTV cameras installed at commercial establishments located on the main roads were scanned on Tuesday to locate Riya but in vain. On Wednesday morning, a few locals spotted a girl's corpse inside a well situated a kilometre away from Jogiya. Mandal and his wife later identified the corpse as that of Riya.
"The person who called Mandal has been found to be a woman from Barmasoya village, about 8 km from Jogiya. She, however, claimed that she made no calls on Tuesday night," Kumar said. The OC added that the woman has been summoned for questioning again. Kumar said the postmortem report did not reveal any foul play.
