MADURAI: In a major haul, the Madurai city police seized 2,090kg of ganja worth Rs4 crore and arrested six people.
Based on secret information, a police team on Tuesday intercepted a car driven by P Rajkumar, 33, of Madurai, at Madurai Ring Road, during a vehicle check. On searching the car, police found that he was smuggling 40kg of ganja. The Keeraithurai police registered a case and arrested Rajkumar, who had already had previous Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act cases against him.
“When he was interrogated, Rajkumar revealed that he was working with a few accomplices from Tuticorin district and procured the ganja from Andhra Pradesh. He said that he had transported the ganja to Sathankulam in Tuticorin district and had taken a portion of it for sale in Madurai,” said B K Aravind, deputy commissioner of police, Madurai north.
On Wednesday, a special police team from Madurai went to Sathankulam to nab the other accused, with the support of the Tuticorin district police. In Sathankulam, police raided a coconut farm belonging to R Raja, 33, of Tuticorin and seized as much as 2,000kg of ganja, which was being smuggled in a pick-up truck. Police also arrested Raja and four others- K Sugumaran, 27, of Madurai, P Sudalaimani, 21, M Maheshkumar, 29, M Muthuraj, 26, of Tuticorin district. Police also traced a truck near a temple at Kochadai in Madurai and seized an additional 50kg of smuggled ganja.
“Rajkumar is the main supplier of ganja directly from Andhra Pradesh. We are also on the lookout for JK alias Jai Kumar who is absconding. Both of them are accused in a case at SS Colony police station wherein 951kg of ganja was seized,” said Aravind. He added that as per preliminary investigations, it appears that the accused are transporting the ganja from Andhra Pradesh to Tuticorin so that it can be smuggled to Sri Lanka. In total, the Madurai city police seized 2,090kg of ganja, three vehicles and eight mobile phones from the accused.
