Chennai Super Kings were struggling at 126/6 when Khaleel Ahmed dismissed Ambati Rayudu. But, the crowd cheered as their favourite, MS Dhoni, came to the crease. MSD made a quickfire 20 off 9 balls, and that made all the difference as Delhi Capitals (DC) lost the match by 27 runs. Those 20 runs came with the help of two sixes and one four.
MS Dhoni has proven time and again that he is one of the best finishers in the game of cricket. However, in IPL 2023, he has pushed himself back in the batting order, settling for number eight. Fans have been wondering why, but it turns out that Dhoni has been nursing a knee injury which has been hindering his running between the wickets.
MSD was seen limping while running between the wickets during the DC match. As per former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan, it was heartbreaking. “Seeing Dhoni limping thru running between the wickets breaks my heart. Have seen him run like a cheetah," Pathan tweeted.
Despite this setback, Dhoni still managed to showcase his exceptional ball-striking skills in the match against the Rajasthan Royals, where he scored an unbeaten 32 runs off just 17 balls. Unfortunately, his efforts were not enough to secure a victory for his team.
During the post-match ceremony after the match against the Delhi Capitals, Dhoni spoke about his role as a finisher and how he approaches his innings. He stated that it was his role and he had informed his team that hitting boundaries and avoiding running too much was what he is supposed to do. He further added that this strategy had been successful, and he was content with contributing to the team in this manner.
Dhoni's performance has been noteworthy, having scored a total of 96 runs, including 10 sixes and three fours, in eight outings at a strike rate of 204.26.
CSK's head coach Stephen Fleming earlier stated that Dhoni's injury has been the main reason behind his lower position in the batting order. According to Fleming, Mahi has a knee injury that is limiting his ability to run while playing.
