CHENNAI: In a rare gesture, the guest block at the Raj Bhavan, usually reserved for the President, Vice-President, governors and former governors, was thrown open to a topper in the recently held Class XII examinations and her family members for a night.
Sabreen Imana from Kadayanallur in Tenkasi district, who secured 590/600 and a state rank, was hosted at the Raj Bhavan guest house along with her family members. When Raj Bhavan officials pointed out to governor R N Ravi that individuals were not allowed to stay in the guest house, he felt there was no problem in relaxing the rules for a student from an economically poor background, who had secured a state rank, studying in Tamil medium.
S S Ameen, headmaster of the Hidayathul Islam higher secondary school, where Sabreen studied, said the family received a call from the Raj Bhavan, offering to bear the expenses of their visit to Chennai. As her father was unwell, she was accompanied by her mother and uncle.
Later, the governor took part in a motivational interaction with toppers of the plus two examination at the Raj Bhavan on Wednesday, where the outstanding performers were welcomed along with their families. The governor congratulated S Nandhini, a student of the Annamalaiyar Girls Higher secondary school in Dindigul, who scored a perfect 600/600.
Later, Nandhini told reporters she had been overwhelmed by her meeting with the governor, something she never thought possible. "It is a great honour. The governor gave us some important inputs. His hospitality was outstanding," said Nandhini, who wants to pursue chartered accountancy like Sabreen Imana.
