Men's garment lag behind other categories in Turkiye's Q1 2023 exports

During the first quarter of this year, men's garments had the lowest share among Turkiye's total apparel exports to the world. However, there has been a positive trend in men's garment exports year-on-year since 2021. Recent trade data indicates that Turkiye exported apparel worth $4.847 billion between January and March 2023. The exports of men's garments were valued at $1.198 billion, accounting for 24.72 per cent of the total exports. 

Women's garment exports had the largest share of the total shipments. The value of women's garment exports reached $1.473 billion in the first quarter of the current year, constituting 38.65 per cent of the total apparel exports worth $4.847 billion. Unisex garments had a significant share of 34.77 per cent in the total exports, with a shipment value of $1.685 billion during the same period, according to Fibre2Fashion's market insight tool TexPro. 

While men's garments had the lowest share of 24.72 per cent in the total apparel exports, they have been showing growth since the easing of the COVID pandemic in 2021. In the first quarter of 2021, the value of men's garment exports from Turkiye was $814.198 million, which was 1.65 per cent lower than the previous year's first quarter in 2020. However, it increased by 28.28 per cent to $1,044.443 million in Q1 2022 and further grew by 14.75 per cent to $1,198.504 million in Q1 2023. 

Among different garment categories, trousers and shorts emerged as the largest category, accounting for 24.44 per cent of Turkiye's total apparel exports to the world. The value of trousers and shorts shipment stood at $1,184.670 million in the first quarter of this year. Other significant categories included T-shirts with exports worth $788.034 million (16.26 per cent), shirts with $600.793 million (12.39 per cent), dresses with $505.059 million (10.42 per cent), jerseys with $441.568 million (9.11 per cent), socks with $291.404 million (6.01 per cent), jackets and blazers with $215.546 million (4.45 per cent), baby wear with $89.918 million (1.85 per cent), and ensembles with $86.475 million (1.78 per cent), according to TexPro.
