Get your electricity meters tested at third party labs in Tamil Nadu

CHENNAI: Do you suspect the reading of your electricity meter fixed by Tangedco is erratic and want to get it checked independently? The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) has released a list of empanelled laboratories where you can do so.
According to Electricity Rules 2020, if a consumer disputes the meter reading, the meter should be tested by Tangedco.
If the consumer is not happy with the Tangedco test report, the meter should be sent to a lab selected by theconsumer from the list approved by the TNERC.
The seven empanelled labs, including two of Tangedco, are certified by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL), said TNERC officials.
According to the Electricity Rules, if the test report from the third party is the same as that of Tangedco, the consumer should bear the cost of the third-party testing.
However, if the test results confirm that the meter is faulty, Tangedco woould pay the test fee and replace the meter free of charge.
According to officials, more private laboratories will be added to the list when they get NABL certification.
Tangedco's testing laboratory when contacted said that it is for the first time that it has got NABL certification.
"We would charge as per the specific testing prescribed," said an official of the electicity utility.
