River Dodder clean after thunderstorm causes manhole to blow sewage everywhere
The river Dodder this morning, May 9th, 2023.
The river Dodder is now clean after Monday night’s thunderstorm caused a manhole to blow.
A local said that there was “poo” and “toilet roll” everywhere.
Cllr Brian Lawlor has shared the good news that the “discharge from the foul line into River Dodder at Firhouse has ceased.”
The Firhouse – Bohernabreena representative told Independent.ie: “There were huge piles of water last night you wouldn’t believe it.
“It was due to the volume of rainfall last night; the system couldn’t take it. Coming down off the hill at Ballycullen and Firhouse, a manhole cover came off with the excess water. There was a huge amount of water that washed into the Weir.
“It lasted from about 7.00pm until 9.00pm Monday night.”

“Most of the water would’ve been rainwater, but it was mixed with the wastewater.
“They’re clearing it up, a new path got washed away. Irish Inland Fisheries were there this morning, they did all the tests. The oxygen levels were in range, so there were no dead fish.”
According to Irish Inland Fisheries this morning, “dissolved oxygen and conductivity readings are all normal at locations above and directly below discharge point.”
“Conductivity readings were taken at several locations downstream of discharge point and all within acceptable range.
“No fish mortalities recorded at the same monitoring locations.
“SDCC is arranging clean up and sanitation of the area surrounding the discharge location.
“Inland Fisheries Ireland will continue to monitor the river Dodder.”
