Police have arrested two men for allegedly cheating 19 people in Maharashtra and Gujarat by posing as women on phone calls and seeking money from them, an official said on Wednesday. The accused used to target jewellers, sweet and medical shop owners as well as blood banks, Mira Bhayander-Vasai Virar (MBVV) police's senior inspector Aviraj Kurhade said.

Mere allegations in a suicide note would not be sufficient to draw conclusion that the accused has committed the offence of abetment, a Mumbai court has said while granting bail to IIT Bombay student Arman Khatri, arrested in connection with fellow student Darshan Solanki's suicide.

The court in its order on Saturday also said there is nothing on record to show that Khatri was harassing Solanki on the ground of caste discrimination or instigated the latter to commit suicide.

Khatri was arrested on April 9. Additional Sessions Judge A P Kanade granted him bail on Saturday.The detailed order was available on Wednesday.

A probe team worked on CCTV footage, and intelligence and technical inputs before zeroing on three men, two 21-year-olds and one aged 19, he said. The official said they have solved as many as 20 bike theft cases, including many registered in Nerul and Sanpada police stations.

Free legal help provided to 120 undertrials for bail in Thane district

As many as 120 undertrials have been ordered to be released from different jails in Maharashtra's Thane district since March following the launch of a scheme that aims at providing free legal services, an official said on Wednesday. These undertrials, aged between 18 years and 70 years, have been in jail since nearly seven years without bail due to reasons like lack of knowledge about the procedure, inability to pay for it or kin not showing any interest in their release, the official said.

According to Ishwar Suryavanshi, secretary of District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), bail for these undertrials, facing charges under NDPS Act, MCOCA and POCSO, was ordered at the last Lok Adalat with the help of a panel of advocates.

Police dept clerk held for demanding bribe

The Anti-Corruption Bureau has arrested a clerk working with the Mira Bhayander-Vasai Virar police for allegedly demanding bribe from another police department employee, the ACB said on Wednesday. The accused and another senior clerk had allegedly sought Rs 1,500 from the employee for forwarding his medical bills for payment, ACB's Palghar unit inspector Sapan Vishwas said. The employee lodged a complaint with the ACB which carried out a probe into the matter and arrested the clerk on Tuesday, the official said.

Woman held in connection with hubby's killing in Navi Mumbai

The Navi Mumbai police arrested a woman in connection with the killing of her 48-year-old husband whose body was found in a public park in Kalamboli area, an official said on Tuesday. The body of the man was found in the CIDCO garden on Monday morning. Prima facie, the woman hired killers for the crime, the official said, adding that the motive was being investigated.

Couple injured in blaze at eatery in Thane

A husband-wife duo received burn injuries in a fire caused due to leakage of gas in their eatery in Rabodi area of Thane city in Maharashtra on Tuesday, officials said. The incident occurred around 5:45 pm in the eatery operated from the ground floor of a seven-storey building. Fire Brigade personnel put out flames within 45 minutes. The duo was hospitalised, the civic officials said.

Maharashtra govt to recruit 30,000 teachers: Minister

Nearly 30,000 teachers will be recruited in Maharashtra possibly by the beginning of the academic year next month, state Minister for School Education Deepak Kesarkar has said. The recruitment procedure will follow the existing reservation norms and there will be interviews as well, the minister told a regional news channel on Tuesday.

"The state school education department will recruit 30,000 teachers in the first stage. We are thinking of completing this process before the beginning of the new academic year in June this year," he said.

The state also plans to recruit another 20,000 teachers in the second stage, Kesarkar said.

Mumbai's Marine Drive to get Rs 82 lakh barricades

BMC has floated a tender for fabricating and fixing barricades/railings on the divider at Marine Drive, from NCPA deadend up to Princess Street flyover. The civic body will spend around Rs82 lakh on it. BMC officials said this came following request letters from senior police inspector, Marine Drive traffic division and Federation of Churchgate Residents to fix barricades/railing to restrict pedestrians from unauthorized crossings and to increase the aesthetic value of the central median.

Newly carved P-East civic ward office to be housed near WEH in Malad (E)

Two years after deciding to split the P-North civic ward into two, BMC has found a place to construct a ward office for the new P-East ward. BMC will acquire a private plot spread over 1,800 sq metres near Western Express Highway in Malad (east) and construct the new ward office there. Following a recommendation from BMC's P-North ward, BMC's Development Plan (DP) department has told the owner of the plot that BMC plans to acquire the plot for the new ward office as the plot is anyway reserved for a municipal chowky and is ideally located.

SC stays Bombay HC order allowing podium recreation grounds

In a setback for builders, the Supreme Court on Monday stayed a January 2023 Bombay high court (HC) order which allowed recreation grounds (RG) on the podiums of their towers.



In the HC, the developers' association Naredco had sought a clarification to a September 2022 order of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that said a developer cannot show any podium in a building as an RG. The NGT said a recreational ground should be open to the sky to enable the planting of trees.
