PATNA: Darbhanga Municipal Corporation (DMC) mayor Anjum Ara and her husband and former ward member Dabbu Khan on Wednesday joined the ruling JD(U) along with their hundreds of supporters at the party’s state office in Bihar's Darbhanga district headquarters town in the presence of several senior party leaders including its national president Rajiv Ranjan alias Lalan Singh.
Dabbu, whose name figured in the toilet scam in the DMC, was a leader of Congress before joining the JD(U) on Wednesday.
JD(U) national president Lalan Singh presented a membership slip to the mayor Anjum Ara soon after she joined the party during a ‘Milan Samaroh’ organized at the party office here.
Speaking on the occasion, Lalan said the Darbhanga mayor joined the JD(U) after being influenced by Bihar CM Nitish Kumar’s dedication towards women empowerment and his overall development works.
Lalan also assured the mayor that she would get “adequate honour” in the party.
The JD(U) president also said that CM Nitish took a historical decision by providing 50% reservation to women in the urban local bodies (ULBs) and panchayati raj institutions (PRIs).
Women like Anjum Ara were holding positions at the various levels of the ULBs and PRIs because of the 50% reservation for women, provided by Nitish Kumar, he said.
Speaking on the occasion, Anjum admitted that a common woman like her became the mayor because of the 50% reservation provided by Nitish Kumar.
The state’s water resources minister Sanjay Kumar Jha and minister Madan Sahani, in their speech, welcomed the mayor in the JD(U). State’s finance minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary also was present on the occasion.
