PORTLAND, Ind. — A Redkey man has pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography after striking a deal with Jay County prosecutors.

Erik E. Caffey, 42, last week pleaded guilty to a Level 5 felony with a maximum six-year sentence.

However, under the terms of a plea agreement taken under advisement by Jay Circuit Court Judge Brian Hutchison, the Redkey man would receive a three-year sentence, with no more than 18 months of incarceration, likely followed by a period on probation.

If the judge accepts the plea bargain, Caffey will be sentenced on June 1.

A deputy on Feb. 4 served a search warrant at Caffey's rural Redkey home and confiscated his cellphone.

Upon searching the phone, the deputy reported "immediately" observing "numerous images and videos of what appeared to be child pornography.”

Those photos and videos reportedly showed juveniles between the ages of 2 and 16 engaging in sexual activity, in some cases with adults.

The Redkey man at that time maintained he had only downloaded images showing adults, and said he did not know how the images of children ended up on his phone.

Caffey was released after posting bond at the Jay County jail, Court records reflect no prior charges against him.

Confinement conviction: A Jay Circuit Court jury has found a Portland man guilty of criminal confinement while armed with a deadly weapon.

Chance L. Mata, 26, was also convicted of intimidation, and found to be a habitual offender. He will be sentenced by Judge Brian Hutchison on May 23.

The confinement charge is a Level 3 felony carrying up to 15 years in prison.

Court records reflect Mata had earlier been convicted of crimes including battery resulting in moderate bodily injury, dealing in meth, intimidation and resisting law enforcement.
