Heavy winds and rain uproot several trees in Madurai, affect power supply

MADURAI: Around 50 trees were uprooted by strong winds and heavy rain in Madurai city on Tuesday night. Power supply was affected in Tallakulam area as some electric poles were damaged.
More than 20 trees were uprooted in areas like Tallakulam, KK Nagar, corporation swimming pool, district court, Aavin junction, Vigilance office and OCPM school.
Apart from this, around 25 trees were uprooted in the ECO Park managed by Madurai Corporation and Arignar Anna Malligai (corporation office).
On Wednesday, corporation officials with the help of fire and rescue services department personnel removed the fallen trees.
Mayor Indrani Ponvasanth said proper instructions had been given to Tangedco officials to repair damaged electric poles and cables.
Around five electric poles were damaged in Tallakulam and on the Gokhale Road. In the afternoon, Tangedco workers repaired the poles and restored power supply.
