LUCKNOW: Samajwadi Party MLA Rakesh Pratap Singh, who was staging a dharna at Gauriganj police station in UP's Amethi, allegedly thrashed the husband of a BJP candidate for the nagar palika chairperson post inside the police station campus on Wednesday.
A video of the incident has gone viral that purportedly shows SP's Gauriganj legislator Rakesh Singh beating Deepak Singh, husband of BJP candidate Rashmi Singh, and policemen and others tying to separate them.
The video further shows Rakesh holding a pistol and threatening to kill himself if action is not taken.
Allegations are that Deepak, who has over 24 criminal cases pending against him, had attacked the MLA’s brother and nephew on Tuesday.
A police complaint was filed, and senior officials were informed but no action was initiated.
To protest the inaction and fearing for his own life, the MLA staged a dharna inside the police station compound when the incident took place.
However, Deepak claimed that SP workers pelted stones at him "with the intention of killing him" and forcing him to take refuge in the police station, where Rakesh Singh and his supporters assaulted him.
Later, on Wednesday night two FIRs were registered against the three-time SP legislator.
Superintendent of police, Amethi, Elamaran G, told TOI that first FIR was registered under the charges of IPC 307 (attempt to murder), IPC 147 (rioting), 148 (armed with weapons) and others on the complaint of Deepak while another FIR was registered for prohibition of section 144 (obstructing police from duty).
When TOI asked him why no action was taken on the complaint of SP legislator, the official said an officer of CO rank conducted a probe and found the allegations to be false.
"We will take action against whoever is guilty," he said.
SP chief Akhilesh Yadav accused the Uttar Pradesh Police of protecting BJP leaders "involved in crime" but not listening to the complaints of MLAs of opposition parties.
"The situation in UP is strange. While those from BJP involved in crime are feeling safe in police stations with policemen standing as a protective cover for them. Even MLAs are not being heard, the condition of the general public is worse," Yadav tweeted.
“It is said that when people do not have any avenue to raise their issues, it leads to fights. The frustration of not getting justice leads to violence," he added in Hindi.
