A visiting European Union (EU) delegation today briefed Sri Lankan government officials on the new EU Generalised Scheme of Preferences (GSP) regulation to be adopted for 2024-2033.

The briefing was part of the 25th session of the EU-Sri Lanka Joint Commission, the Sri Lankan ministry of foreign affairs said in a statement.

The Joint Commission will deliberate on a range of bilateral and multilateral issues and discuss areas for cooperation.

The meeting was co-chaired by ministry secretary Aruni Wijewardane and Paola Pampaloni, deputy managing director for Asia and the Pacific of the EU’s European External Action Service.

The new GSP will be effective from January 1 next year.

The outcome of three working groups set up under the Joint Commission—on governance, rule of law and human rights; on trade and economic cooperation; and on development cooperation—was also discussed at the meeting, according to Sri Lankan media reports.

The last meeting of the Joint Commission was held in February 2022 in Brussels.
