Sukha Barewal fell to four bullets, arrest of 'friends' awaited in Ludhiana

LUDHIANA: Slain gangster Sukhpreet Singh alias Sukha Barewal, who was shot dead at the house of his friend-turned-rival Rohit Malhotra in Joginder Nagar, Haibowal area, took four bullets. The autopsy report said that two of these pierced through his body. It is suspected that the weapon used in Sukha's murder could be branded while the bullet injury sustained by Rohit Malshotra was from a country-made pistol.
Haibowal police have lodged an FIR against three persons, including the injured Rohit Malhotra, whose condition is stated to be out of danger, Gopal Mahajan alias Gopi of Pakhowal road and Sooraj Parkash alias Babbu of Arya Mohalla. The case has been registered under sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 120-B (Criminal conspiracy) of IPC and Arms Act.
The shootout at Rohit's house in Joginder Nagar of Haibowal area killed gangster Sukha Barewal while Rohit suffered one bullet injury and is undergoing treatment. The other two accused had managed to escape.
The autopsy of Barewal's body was conducted on Tuesday, after which last rites were performed by his family members.
Assistant commissioner of police- west Mandeep Singh Sandhu said, "Sukha Barewal reached Rohit's house on a scooter with Sooraj Parkash, while Gopal came on his own. All four are friends and co-accused in several cases. They are suspected to have indulged in a spat over their shares, after which gunshots were fired. It has been ascertained that two weapons were used in the crime. A country-made pistol has been recovered from the spot. It is suspected that Gopal and Sooraj escaped with the other weapon.
In the murder case of Sukhpreet Singh alias Sukha Barewal, who was shot down at the house of his friend-turned-rival Rohit Malhotra in Joginder Nagar, ACP Mandeep Singh Sandhu said the type of weapon used would be ascertained after the arrest of Gopal and Sooraj, or once the statements of Rohit were recorded.
A doctor from Ludhiana civil hospital said, “Sukha Barewal suffered four bullet injuries. Two bullets pierced through his body from chin and right forearm, while two were stuck in his body. The weapon used to shoot Barewal dead is suspected to be a branded one.” However, Sukha Barewal’s wife Amita said that her husband wanted to quit crime.
