Xavier University President Colleen Hanycz releases statement on Bob Huggins' comments

On Monday, former University of Cincinnati men's basketball coach Bob Huggins used a homophobic slur during a radio interview on WLW-AM (700) with Bill Cunningham, referencing Xavier University students.

Xavier President Collen Hanycz released a statement addressing the matter Tuesday afternoon on Twitter.

"I want to be as clear as I can about what Xavier University − and I − stand for following a segment on a local radio station yesterday. Our mission as a Jesuit Catholic university is to educate each student intellectually, morally and spiritually; to provide an inclusive environment of open and free inquiry; and, to prepare students for a world that is increasingly diverse, complex and independent," Hanycz said in a statement. "Our commitment is to educating the whole person, promoting the common good and serving others."

Huggins, UC's head basketball coach for 16 seasons from 1989-2005, issued an apology on Twitter Monday after the news of his comments went viral, saying, "there are consequences for our words and actions, and I will fully accept any coming my way.
