Airports in Imphal, Guwahati and Kolkata were crammed with people as private airlines launched a massive evacuation drive to airlift students and working professionals from other states scrambling to get out of
Manipur, where ethnic clashes erupted on May 3 and left 60 people dead. Over 450 people were flown to Guwahati airport, while many more flew directly to Kolkata from where they transited to their home states.
Officials said 106 students from Telangana were among 160 people from the state who landed Monday in Hyderabad from Imphal.
Spoorthi CH, a student studying at NIT, Imphal, said they saw bombings and gunfire from their campus and they survived on limited food supplies because of the curfew. “We could see everything burning down,” she said.
Andhra Pradesh evacuated 161 students of the state on two special flights Monday. Around 25 students from Maharashtra are expected to be back home by Monday night. The Bengal government evacuated 18 students studying at a central university in Imphal.
The Haryana government has initiated efforts to evacuate 16 students.
Five students from Himachal Pradesh were evacuated safely from Imphal to Kolkata and thereon to New Delhi.
