TN taking steps to protect Tamils in Manipur: Stalin

CHENNAI: Chief minister M K Stalin on Tuesday said the Tamil Nadu government is taking steps to protect Tamils living in Moreh, a town in riot-hit Manipur bordering Myanmar, through the Tamil Sangam.
In a statement, Stalin said, "Connection has been established with Tamils who are living for more than 50 years in Moreh. Through the representatives of Tamil Sangam, the state government has taken steps to protect them," said Stalin.
The civil war in Manipur and the subsequent violence resulted in damage to the properties of Tamils. Their livelihood has been disturbed.
Based on requests, "five Tamil students are being airlifted" from Manipur. They would reach Chennai on Tuesday night, he said.
Stalin said immediately after the violence broke out, communication was established with students in Manipur and essential items such as food and water were provided with the support of Manipur officials.
"As the medical students are safe on their college premises and are preparing for their semester exams, they have not expressed interest to come back to Tamil Nadu," added Stalin.
In a tweet, PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss urged the state government to render help to Tamils in Manipur. "Around 40 houses of Tamils were burnt in the violence. Though steps are taken to help the Tamils through the Tamil Sangam, it is not sufficient. The state government should step-in. Tamils in Manipur are expecting the state government to extend all possible help. Tamils are not ready to come to Tamil Nadu. However, at the same time, they want the Tamil Nadu government to extend help," said Anbumani.
