There would be a common uniform for Brigadier and above rank officers irrespective of the parent cadre and appointment.

The Indian Army is set to adopt a common uniform for all officers from the rank of Brigadier and above. The attire will be used irrespective of parent cadre and appointment, and is aimed at bringing a common identity and approach in service matters amongst senior leadership.

"This will also reinforce the Indian Army's character to be a fair and equitable organisation. The decision was taken after detailed deliberations during the recently concluded Army Commanders Conference and extensive consultations with all stakeholders," news agency ANI quoted official sources to add.

The changed uniforms will reportedly come into effect from August 1 this year. There will however be no change in attire for Colonels and below-rank officers of the Indian Army.

There are presently a wide variety of uniforms and accessories worn by officials - with specific links to their arms, regiments and services. While reports citing sources emphasised the need for a distinct identity within the unit or battalion level, it was deemed irrelevant for the highly ranked officials who mostly work together at headquarters and the Army establishments.

What exactly will change?

Flag-rank officers will no longer wear lanyards. The headgear, shoulder rank badges, gorget patches, belts and shoes of senior officers of flag rank (Brigadier and above) will now be standardised and uniform.
