2 accused escape from police custody at Pune’s Sassoon Hospital in 2 weeks, 1 arrested

In the recent case, Virendra Singh Thakur, 40, a resident of Dahisar in Mumbai, escaped from the Sassoon Hospital where he was taken for treatment on May 6. The police said Thakur was recently arrested in connection with a theft case lodged at the Alephata police station of the Pune Rural police.

Constable Prashant Tangadkar of Pune Rural police had lodged the First Information Report (FIR) against Thakur at the Bund Garden police station after he fled.

Thakur was reportedly unwell and admitted to Ward Number 9 of the Sassoon Hospital for treatment. Tangadkar was on duty with him. Around 11.15 am, when Tangadkar went to complete the formalities regarding the medical treatment being provided to Thakur, the accused took advantage of the situation and fled from the spot.

On April 22, Balu alias Chakradhar Godse, 30, who was arrested by the Ahmednagar police in connection with the illegal possession and sale of country-made pistols, had similarly escaped from the Sassoon Hospital.

Constable Prakash Mandge of Ahmednagar police had then lodged an FIR against Godse at the Bund Garden police station. Mandge was interacting with the hospital staff regarding Godse’s discharge, and another constable had accompanied Godse to the washroom when he allegedly released himself from his handcuffs and escaped.

Senior Police Inspector Santosh Patil of the Bund Garden police station said, “We have arrested Godse and a search has been launched for accused Thakur”.

Asked about the negligence of the policemen at the hospital, Patil said, “Proper precautionary measures should be followed for preventing such incidents.”
