Money-doubling case: Former police informer is still on run

Nagpur: Parvez Patel, a former police informer-turned-money doubling agent, has managed to remain out of the police dragnet even after a week since the offence of fraud and cheating was registered against him and two others.
Even though the complaint was routed through city police chief Amitesh Kumar, Nandanvan police have made no progress in the case.
Rakesh Umre, a resident of Madhya Pradesh, was duped of ₹25 lakh by Patel and his gang having an office at Hasanbagh in February this year by promising a return of ₹1.25 crore.
Patel already has an offence registered against him. His office, located within a couple of kilometres from Nandanvan police station, was often frequented by cops from different units.
The only accused, Parag Mohod, nabbed by the crime branch a day after the offence was registered at Nandanvan police station on May 2, was also sent to central jail by the magistrate denying the plea for further remand by the cops on Monday.
Mohod, a close aide of Patel, was in the custody of Nandanvan police for five days but the cops could not make any further arrests. There were no recoveries or seizures, raising questions for the investigation team.
CP Amitesh Kumar said he had directed the crime branch to help the victim from the Madhya Pradesh before directing Nandanvan police to take up the case. “The complainants approached me directly,” said the CP, adding, Patel’s locations were being traced to Goa and Mumbai initially.
“I have urged the Zonal DCP too look into the case,” said the top cop.
While cops are claiming Patel’s arrest has become difficult as his cellphone locations are unavailable, a source said the accused was frequently changing his WhatsApp status.
Apart from Patel, cops are also clueless about another accused in the case, Kanchan Gosavi, who too had mediated the deal between Umre and the accused gang.
Patel was threatening his victims and also frightened them by flaunting his connections with cops, said a source, adding, police also must look into the fake currency angle involved in the racket.
