Canacona: In a novel initiative, each member who attended a recently held gram sabha at Agonda, Canacona, was given 2kg of manure produced from waste collected from the village. The move was aimed at educating people about composting while also highlighting the panchayat’s efforts to successfully tackle the garbage problem.
Panch Amol Naikgaunkar said that apart from installing a modern waste-processing plant with government funds, the panchayat had engaged a private agency to operate innovative machinery meant for processing wet garbage on a daily basis. The decision paid off as more than a tonne of manure produced from the waste was made available for use. Some of this was distributed to members of the gram sabha on Sunday for domestic use.
The panchayat now plans to set up a kiosk to sell the remaining manure at an affordable price on May 22, which is marked as International Day for Biological Diversity.
Sarpanch Fatima Rodrigues said the panchayat has engaged labourers specifically for garbage collection and to operate the village’s baling maching. “These labourers will help keep the roads and some black spots that are often used by litterbugs, neat and clean,” Rodrigues said.
