AIZAWL: The number of internally displaced people (IDP) who have fled Manipur and taken shelter in Mizoram rose to over 1,000, while more influx is expected, state home department officials said on Monday.
The officials said the most number of displaced people have taken shelter in Kolasib district on the Assam border with over 750 people entering the district till Monday morning and more likely to arrive in the days to come.
These people, mostly aged, women and children, fled Manipur's Churachandpur district to take refuge in Mizoram, joined their relatives and friends or are being lodged in vacant buildings while relief camps are being set up in several villages.
In Kolasib district, the maximum number of people took shelter in Saipum, Saiphai, Pangbalkawn, Phainuam and Rengtekawn villages as well as in Vairengte town on the Assam border. Other districts, which are hosting the displaced persons are Aizawl, Saitual and Champhai.
