THANE: You'd probably have butterflies in your tummy at his daredevilry. But Navi Mumbai daredevil, Pandit Dhaygude (42) didn't bat an eyelid as six heavy bullet bikes rode over his stomach 377 times in close succession for over 62 minutes at the open Kopri ground in Thane on Sunday morning.
With this feat, the bank peon beat his own record when 122 bikes had crossed over his stomach. He will now seek a fresh entry in the Guinness Book of World Records.
On Sunday, six heavy bullet motorbikes, each weighing nearly 250 kg, rode over Dhaygude's abdomen as he lay on his back, sandwiched between two iron ramps as curious onlookers kept the ambience charged. The record was finalised after a 450kg bullet bike vroomed over his belly, a loud cheer from the crowd filling the air.
Experts said the attempt was "very risky" and a slight miscalculation could've left the ribs crushed. But Dhaygude was unfazed. "I have faith in my training of the last several years..." said Dhaygude who does abdominal crunches for two hours early morning and late night to strengthen the stomach muscles.
Some of the bikers were wary, and I had to egg them on to ride over me," he said amid congratulatory messages from onlookers. "I beat my own record of 2016 where 121 bikes had crossed over my stomach. The earlier record was set by someone abroad," he said. Hailing from a humble farmer family in Sangli district, Dhaygude says he was always fascinated with fitness and karate. When he moved to Mumbai in the 1990s, the desire to set a world record by letting vehicles pass stirred within.
A father of two chldren, Dhayude follows a simple protein-rich diet comprising boiled sprouts and meat and avoids artificial supplements, aerated drinks, alcohol and tobacco.
His mentor, Ganesh Margaje, who helped streamline his technique and channelised his potential for the feat. said: "Initially, I was stunned on hearing of his ambition but looking at his determinations I decided to start training him."
