Ludhiana: A day after an inmate escaped from the high-security Ludhiana central jail, two inmates of an observation home in Shimlapuri ran away in a broad daylight on Sunday.
According to the police, the inmates used a rope, made of bedsheet, to flee the observation home.
Police said two more inmates had similar plans and were waiting for the duo to help them climb the wall. However, the duo escaped keeping them waiting.
The 17-year-old inmate was facing trial in a theft case and another inmate Mandeep Singh was a convict in an NDPS case.
Assistant commissioner of police (industrial area-B) Sandeep Vadhera said, “The incident occurred around 12.30pm on Sunday and the matter came to light when the security personnel saw a bedsheet hanging from the wall. The counting of inmates were made and the duo were found missing.”
The ACP said, “An initial probe found that the escape plan was originally made by four inmates. Initially two inmates climbed a 20-ft boundary wall. At the height of 10 feet, an angle was installed for the installation of CCTV camera. Though CCTV camera was not there, it made the task easier for them. The duo climbed the wall with the help of a bedsheet and jumped outside. The other two inmates kept waiting.”
Vadhera said, “Earlier too, some inmates had escaped from the same spot a few years ago. Behind that wall, there is a crowded residential area. An FIR has been lodged against the duo who are being traced.”
Two home guards — Vidya Sagar and Varinder Parshad — deputed at the observation home have also been booked for negligence in duty.
