Mahadev Bhise, a resident of Ramnagar in Pimpri-Chinchwad, was on his way back home from his annual pilgrimage to Osmananad when he was killed in a road accident on the Pune-Solapur highway.

Bhise, 40, was one of the two people who were killed in the accident when a private passenger bus he was travelling in rammed into a goods truck on the highway near Kurkumbh in the Daund taluka of the Pune district Saturday.

“Every year, my father visited our family deity in Osmanabad. This year too, he went there. He always went alone,” said Bhise’s son Sahil. “Just when my father boarded the bus around 12 midnight on Friday, I called him. My father told me that he would reach Pune in the morning,” he added.

After the death of Bhise, who ran a chicken meat shop in the Ramnagar area of Chinchwad, the family lost a breadwinner. Sahil, 21, who has studied up to Class 12, is now looking for a job to support his homemaker mother.

“I never worked with my father in the chicken shop. I have no idea about it… My father used to earn Rs 20,000-25,000 per month. Now, where will that money come from? We have a problem of survival now… We don’t even have many close relatives here in Pimpri-Chinchwad,” he said.

Sahil said during the coronavirus pandemic when the chicken shop had to be shut, their family suffered a lot. “However, my father had kept some savings which helped us to sustain ourselves. He cared for his family a lot and now suddenly we find ourselves in all kinds of trouble,” he said.

Bhise, who had been running the chicken shop for 25 years, was popular in the area. “In the Ramnagar area, everyone wanted to buy chicken from him. This is because he was a good-natured person and was ready to give a discount to those whom he knew,” said Dilip Datir-Patil, a family friend.
