Margao: After over two months, the mystery of the overflowing sewage in the Comba subway has been detected and subsequently plugged, said Margao MLA Digambar Kamat.
“The sewage was found to be leaking through a sewage tank near the subway,” Kamat told reporters, adding, “After the leakage was plugged, the sewage flow inside the subway was reduced. Subsequently, once the interconnection of the new sewage line was completed, the sewage flow stopped completely.”
Relieved on the success of the troubleshooting exercise, the local MLA said, “Nobody could pinpoint the exact problem or trace the source of the leaking sewage that seeped through the subway,” he said.
Kamat said he had constituted a team of experts from the public works department (PWD), the water resources department (WRD) and traffic police to streamline traffic along the route. “The committee has suggested that the incoming traffic from the subway be diverted by demolishing the old sewage tank, which is now disconnected from the sewerage network, and be linked to the ring road. The work will start soon. The subway will be closed for a few days to carry out carpeting and other repair works,” he said.
As health concerns were raised, Kamat had conducted a site inspection of the subway along with PWD, WRD and sewerage department officials over two months ago.
