JALANDHAR: After spending chilling nights in the tents, oustees of Latifpura are now spending the hot summer days too in the tents but they appear determined to stay out here till they get rehabilitated at the same place.
While their issue has largely been missing from the political discourse during the election campaign, Sidhu Moosewala’s parents pushed this up with their vist on Saturday as they started their campaign against Aam Aadmi Party from the locality where oustees are living beside the debries of their demolished houses.
“I usedto stitch clothes, but now I am unable to pay college and school fee of my children,” said Rita Devi with her daughter Mansi and son Vineet Kumar sitting in the tent. “The only satisfaction is that we don’t have to stay hungry as Khalsa Aid has been providing three meals a day,” she said.
Brothers Mohinder Singh and Kulwant Singh, who were keeping their cows amid the debris, said that 16 members of their families were living in two tents. “Already four of our cattle have died,” they said, adding their grandparents settled here after coming from Pakistan during Partition.
Another resident, Sarabjeet Singh, said that they had already seen worst of the cold weather and now they were ready to face the extreme heat.
Around eight organizations, including farm groups, Left groups,
Sikh groups especially SAD (Amritsar) continue to support their protest.
